Gyempo Wangchuk was born in the eastern Bhutanese town of Trashi Yangtse and graduated from the National Institute for Zorig Chusum, the country’s premier institution for traditional arts and crafts. Renowned for his exceptional technical mastery and innate artistic talent, Gyempo’s thangka paintings are celebrated for their vibrant colors and exquisite detail. While grounded in classical Buddhist iconography and traditional technique, his works display remarkable originality and innovation, earning him the reputation of being “Bhutan’s Thangka prodigy.” His thangka paintings have twice won first prize at Bhutan’s National Thangka Competition, and in late 2022, he was awarded the nation’s highest honor—the title of “Master of Thangka”—becoming the youngest artist in Bhutanese history to receive this distinction.
Gyempo’s passion for art extends far beyond the boundaries of traditional thangka painting. Since 2012, under the mentorship of Asha Kama, widely regarded as the father of contemporary art in Bhutan, Gyempo has ventured into the realm of contemporary art, seeking to merge the rigorous discipline of traditional Bhutanese painting with the conceptual inquiries of modern expression. His works are meticulously rendered using natural mineral pigments, and thematically address Bhutanese Buddhist culture, personal narratives, and pressing global issues such as pandemics, war, and modernization. Deeply rooted in the spiritual and cultural landscapes of the Eastern Himalayas, Gyempo’s art offers a contemplative reflection on humanity and faith, distinguished by its emotional depth and visual refinement. In 2018, his sustained creative energy earned him first prize at Bhutan’s National Contemporary Art Competition, making him the only Bhutanese artist proficient in both traditional thangka and contemporary art practices.
Gyempo’s artistic achievements have been recognized and supported by the Bhutanese Royal Family. In 2019, His Majesty the Fifth King and Her Majesty the Queen personally attended his first solo exhibition, “Ribong,” in Thimphu. His works are included in the collections of both the Royal Family and the Prime Minister of Bhutan. Following this, he was invited to exhibit internationally in New York, Brussels, India, Indonesia, and Taiwan. In 2021, the Rubin Museum of Art in New York initiated a collaboration with Gyempo, and the following year, his work “Healing” was featured on the cover of the museum’s annual journal Spiral. In 2023, Gyempo was shortlisted for the 19th Sovereign Asian Art Prize, distinguishing himself among 400 artists across the Asia-Pacific region as the first Bhutanese contemporary artist ever to reach the finalist stage.
As contemporary Himalayan art gains increasing recognition within the global art and collecting community, Bhutan has emerged as a vital new center of attention within this cultural context. Through his innovative integration of traditional thangka language and contemporary aesthetics, Gyempo Wangchuk has established himself as a defining figure in both Bhutanese and Asian contemporary art.
In September 2025, his works were on view at the Tainan Art Museum, Building 2, in the exhibition “Labyrinthus Universi: Himalayan Contemporary Art,” where he continues to reinterpret the spiritual essence of Bhutanese tradition through a contemporary artistic lens.
