Li Yitian (b. 1992) graduated with a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the Department of Calligraphy and Painting Arts at the National Taiwan University of Arts in 2018. Her work not only reflects the pulse of Taiwanese society but is also inspired by global culture and the vitality of women. She combines personal experiences with universal values to explore the meaning of existence and the deeper layers of humanity.
During the tumultuous pandemic era, Li Yitian created the “Life” series, using the lotus flower as the central motif to develop various narratives. These works symbolize responses and adaptations to significant life changes, constructing illusory reflections that convey the Buddhist philosophy that all things are fleeting and empty. The reflection of the lotus in the water mirrors the concept of “flowering and seeing one’s Buddha nature,” recognizing one’s inherent Buddha nature through inner reflection and realizing that true understanding of the world comes through inner cultivation and contemplation. This series not only reflects her thoughts on social change and the human heart but also serves as a spiritual guide, encouraging viewers to let go of past attachments and bravely face future uncertainties. Over time, especially post-pandemic, her themes have evolved to explore the profound philosophy of life as a dream, recognizing the impermanence and illusion of all phenomena and understanding that all attachments and fears are mere projections.
Li Yitian’s works deeply resonate with the fear of the unknown and change, and how to find inner strength and wisdom in the face of real-world challenges. She carefully selects soft pastel colors, quantifying the calcium carbonate content in the pigments. These gentle colors provide a soothing visual experience, bringing relaxation and healing. This use of color not only alleviates the stress of daily life but also offers viewers a peaceful and tranquil mental space.
Another distinctive feature of Li Yitian’s work is the use of symbols. She transforms the six-syllable mantra “om mani padme hum” into continuous symbols that fill her artworks and frames. These symbols, while aesthetically pleasing, are intended to guide viewers beyond the surface of the material world, helping them to recognize that all phenomena are illusions, thus aiding them in letting go of attachments and achieving spiritual purity and liberation.
In summary, Li Yitian’s creations are not just artistic expressions but also profound reflections on contemporary social conditions and sources of healing power. Through symbols, colors, and motifs, she conveys hope and courage to her audience, guiding them to maintain inner peace and balance in challenging and changing times, inspiring inner potential and promoting personal growth and liberation.
