Pema “Tintin” Tshering (b. 1985), known fondly as Tintin, is a versatile and multi-talented artist whose creations span a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture, film, illustration, and design. He passionately explores and experiments with various creative methods to express his ideas and perspectives. Tintin’s unique and innovative approach seeks to challenge conventional visual structures and meanings. By blending traditional thangka compositions and Buddhist figures with elements of contemporary and abstract art, he has forged a fresh and dynamic visual style.
In Bhutan, where Tantric Buddhism is devoutly practiced, people are surrounded by and are deeply familiar with formulaic Buddhist art in their daily lives. Tintin challenges this norm, believing that excessive familiarity with traditional Buddhist imagery can hinder a deeper understanding of its core teachings.
Tintin’s distinctive creations lie in his fusion of modern art forms to explore the concepts of self and non-self, using art as a means to delve into the journey of life and the experience of emotions. His works aim to grasp the essence of life and share this interstitial experience through his art. Tintin is celebrated for his profound artistic reflections and sophisticated use of multimedia. He masterfully transforms his surroundings and viewpoints into tangible and conceptually captivating artworks. By combining abstract painting techniques and drips with the fine lines and symbolic motifs of traditional thangka, he creates contemporary pieces imbued with a modern and pop art vibe. He draws from tradition, breathing new life into it with a contemporary twist.
As one of the leading figures in Bhutan’s contemporary art movement, Tintin reframes Buddhist and Bhutanese concepts and conveys the identity and living environment of modern Bhutanese people through his art. He merges compelling subjectivity with mature artistic skills to address complex visual themes in an engaging and powerful manner. His works redefine traditional Tantric Buddhist symbols in the modern world, challenging perceptions of modernity and exploring the dogmas and history of Bhutanese traditional culture.
Tintin’s art has garnered international recognition, having been invited to participate in prestigious exhibitions such as the Florence Biennale in Italy (2019), the 5th Bangkok Triennale International Print and Drawing Exhibition (2019), the 18th Asian Art Biennale in Bangladesh (2018), and the 5th Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale in Japan (2014). He has also held solo exhibitions in Bhutan and Taiwan, establishing himself as one of Bhutan’s most prominent contemporary artists.
