The Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art in New York has recently acquired nine paintings by seven contemporary artists, including Gyempo Wangchuk, represented by Tansbao Gallery.

Based in Thimphu, Bhutan, Gyempo Wangchuk works with locally sourced mineral pigments on canvas, interweaving traditional Himalayan visual language with a contemporary perspective. The acquired work Ripples was previously exhibited at the Tainan Art Museum; during the opening, the museum’s director, Jorrit Britschgi, was present in support of the growing development of Himalayan contemporary art in Asia. The work was subsequently selected for acquisition into the Rubin Museum’s collection.

Drawing from the concept of “Ripples”, the work invites reflection on how each thought and action creates ripples in the world. The figures circulating within the composition evoke the continuous cycle of desire, anger, and ignorance, while the work presents the notion of karma as a force shaping both individual and collective realities. Ultimately, it turns back toward the viewer, posing a quiet question: what causes are we setting in motion, and what future do they create?

Our sincere congratulations to Gyempo Wangchuk on this important achievement. From its presentation in Tainan to its acquisition by an international museum, this progression marks a significant milestone in the artist’s practice.

His works will be included in “Gateway to Himalayan Art”, a traveling exhibition organized by the Rubin Museum, which introduces the principal forms, concepts, and living traditions of Himalayan art. The exhibition will tour university museums and institutions across the United States through 2030.
